Tray packaging provides a rigid or semi-rigid base that protects products during transport and display. Combined with lidding films or overwrap, trays offer excellent product visibility and tamper evidence. They are widely used for fresh foods, ready meals, and medical devices.
Choosing a tray sealer
A tray sealer heat-seals a lidding film onto filled trays and cuts it to the tray. The PSG SUNG tray sealer range comes in steps. On the semi-automatic ESHSA-401 an operator loads filled trays and the machine seals them, which suits small batches, R&D, and central kitchens. The ESHR-301 and high-speed ESHR-301H rotary sealers carry trays through load, seal, and discharge stations for mid- and high-volume lines, and the inline ESCS-201 and ESCM-201S take trays straight from the line.
Intermittent sealers such as the ESCS-201 index and seal trays in a stop-start cycle, which gives clean, consistent seals and quick die changes between tray formats. Continuous sealers such as the ESCM-201S keep trays moving for higher throughput. Every PSG SUNG tray sealer is built in stainless steel with a hygienic design.
Modified atmosphere and vacuum
Fresh meat, produce, and ready meals often need more than a seal. The ESHSA-401MAP removes the air from the tray and flushes in a protective gas mix before sealing, which extends shelf life and preserves color, flavor, and freshness, and the high-speed ESHR-301H can be configured for MAP as well. When a product is better packed under vacuum in a pouch, the ESVCM chamber vacuum packer is the alternative.
Blister and clamshell trays
For medical devices and consumer goods, the tray is usually formed in line. The PSG SUNG ESB-501 blister packer thermoforms pockets up to 80 mm deep from PVC, PET, PP, or PS film and seals them at up to 15 cycles a minute — the format for syringes, medical tubing, toothbrushes, and other disposables.
After the tray is sealed
Sealed trays still need labels and shipping cases. The PSG Top & Bottom Labeler labels trays, tubs, and cartons on both sides in one pass at up to 75 a minute, RADPAK's RT-01 forms corrugated trays from flat blanks at up to 40 a minute, and the RKZ-22 and RKZ-27 case packers pack products into wrap-around cases or open trays.
